The Austrian Dominic Thiem qualified this Thursday for the quarterfinals of the Estoril Open, beating the young American Ben Shelton, in two sets, at the Clube de Ténis do Estoril.
winner of open of the United States in 2020, Thiem, currently ranked 111th in the ATP rankings, defeated the 20-year-old Shelton 6-2, 6-2, in one hour and four minutes.
Thiem, who until the Estoril Open only had one victory this season, had not reached the quarterfinals of an ATP tournament since October 2022, when he reached the ‘half’ in Antwerp.
In the quarterfinals, the former number three in the world will face the winner of the match between the Spanish Roberto Bautista Agut, 28th in the classification World Cup, and the Frenchman Quentin Halys (80th), who beat the Portuguese Nuno Borges in the first round.
Thiem still returns to the courts from the Clube de Ténis do Estoril, to, together with the Portuguese João Sousa, try to reach the semifinal of the doubles tournament, facing the Ecuadorian Gonzalo Escobar and the Frenchman Fabien Reboul, third seeded.
For Ben Shelton, the world number 39 player, it was the end of his first tournament in Europe and his first on clay on the ATP circuit.
