Roger Schmidt: ‘We were not at our best with and without the ball’

In the first analysis of the game against FC Porto, Benfica coach Roger Schmidt assumed that the team was not at the usual level. “We weren’t at our best, with and without the ball,” he complained.

In statements on flash interview from BTV, the German coach spoke of a match with few opportunities “for both teams”, something that FC Porto managed to take advantage of. “We didn’t have many, just like the opponent, who had two and took advantage of ithe considered.

Referring to the fact that Benfica played “several games at a very high level” and that this Friday saw “what football can be”, Roger Schmidt also said that the team needs to grow with this defeat, after “growing with many victories”.

At the end of the game, the coach also left a word to the red fans who filled the stadium: “The fans have supported us a lot, even when we didn’t play very well. They believe in us.”

But as soon as the final whistle blew, the match against FC Porto was over. “On Tuesday we have another important game [em casa, frente ao Inter de Milão, para a Liga dos Campeões]. We need to recover quickly. A great game awaits us. We need to recover quickly, analyze this game, do some things better,” he told BTV, before concluding: “We need to look ahead.” In the press room, Roger Schmidt also opined that “it wasn’t the day” for Benfica.

At the end of the match, he also revealed that Sérgio Conceição wished “good luck with Tuesday’s match”, after Roger Schmidt congratulated the dragons’ coach.
