Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal will miss the Barcelona tournament due to a muscle injury to his left leg suffered at the Australian Open in January, the record holder of titles in the Catalan clay-court event announced on Friday.
“Barcelona is special because it is my adopted club and because playing at home is always a unique feeling. However, I am not done yet and therefore have to continue with the recovery process.”informed Nadal, ranked 15th in the world, on the social network Twitter.
The Spanish tennis player, holder of the record for titles in the Barcelona tournament, with 12 trophies won (the last of which will be in 2021), should have returned to competition in the Masters 1,000 in Monte Carlo, which started last Sunday, but was forced to another postponement.
The result of the clinical tests carried out in January indicated a six to eight week absence from the courts, which would allow Nadal, aged 36, to start the season on clay with a view to competing at Roland Garros, in May, in which he will try to win the Grand Slam in Paris for the 15th time.
