Director of the Volta a Portugal hit by car on European car-free day in Lisbon

Former cyclist Joaquim Gomes, current director of the Volta a Portugal by bike, was hit by a car on a bicycle on Avenida da Liberdade, in Lisbon, on Thursday morning.

An unusual accident that took place on the European Car Free Day, in which the former cyclist suffered minor head and arm injuries and was therefore treated in a hospital.

“Luckily I’m fine, but I can tell you that in 18 years of cycling I don’t remember such a spectacular fall,” Joaquim Gomes told Rádio Renascença when he was still in the ambulance on his way to the hospital, also explaining how the accident happened: “It was going down the Avenida da Liberdade at about 40 km/h. At one of the intersections, a poor English gentleman, who was so nice, crossed the red one. I had no chance. I crashed and climbed over the car.”
