The court confirms that eight health workers will stand trial for Maradona’s death

An appeals court in Argentina confirmed on Tuesday that eight people are on trial in the case of the death of former footballer Diego Armando Maradona, for the alleged crime of manslaughter with possible intent.

According to judicial sources, the court of the city of San Isidro has unanimously decided to reject the requests to annul the trial and to change the legal classification of the judicial process.

The eight persons who will sit on the defendant’s couch are the neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, the psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, the psychologist Carlos Díaz, Nancy Forlini, the doctor who coordinated the home care of the former football player, the nursing coordinator Mariano Perroni, the nurse Ricardo Omar Almirón, nurse Dahiana Gisela Madrid and clinical doctor Pedro Di Spagna.

The health workers, who remain at large until trial as the San Isidro Prosecutor’s Office has never requested pre-trial detention, face sentences that could range from eight to 25 years in prison.

Diego Armando Maradona, who scored 91 caps and 34 goals for Argentina, died on November 25, 2020 at the age of 60 after suffering cardiac arrest at his home in Tigre, Buenos Aires province.

Maradona’s career as a footballer, from 1976 to 1997, was marked by winning the 1986 World Cup, with Argentina, and two Italian titles and a UEFA Cup for Napoli, the emblem for which he played from 1984 to 1991.

‘El Pibe’ also represented Argentinos Juniors (1976 to 1980), Boca Juniors (1981 and between 1995 and 1997), FC Barcelona (1982 to 1984), Sevilla (1992/93) and Newell’s Old Boys (1993/94).
