Coach Rúben Amorim assumed this Sunday that he had “absolutely” failed the objectives of the 2022/23 football season and that in the end he will evaluate what is best for Sporting, but without confirming his intention to leave the club.
At a press conference in Alcochete, the coach clarified that “what he wanted to do” at the end of the meeting with Juventus, on Thursday, “was to assume responsibilities” and say that “the minimum objectives” were not achieved, in addition to the fact that such an assessment it will be done “at the end of the season”.
“I am responsible for the sporting part and we have failed so far. We are failing miserably. And for this reason, as a club, we have to talk. I have to talk to people, give my explanations and assume my responsibility. We’ll see what’s best for the club. Nothing more than that”, clarified Rúben Amorim.
Previously, the coach had already underlined that “this does not change anything in the coach’s desire to stay or [significa] that he changed his mind and wants to leave”, and recalled that, as Sporting’s “boy of the sports project”, he would not feel good if he did not assume his responsibilities with the board at the end of the season.
“I can’t get away, I wouldn’t feel good and I would even feel a little embarrassed if I didn’t have this conversation with the board and with the president. It is just that, without drama, as in all companies that do not reach their objectives, ”he said.
Still on his words after the elimination he suffered against the Italians, in the quarterfinals of the Europa League, Amorim kept “what he said about the striker”, when he recalled that Liedson, Derlei and Slimani did not win any championship for Sporting. , unlike Paulinho and Tiago Tomás.
“What I said about the forward, I maintain it. Obviously that may be one of the factors for the lack of effectiveness, but that does not mean that this is the main reason for the failure of our goals and, in that sense, I am waiting [o que disse]’ he insisted.
The coach discussed Sporting’s possible departure at the end of the season during the press conference prior to the visit to Vitória de Guimarães, which counts for matchday 29 of the 1st Football League.
On Thursday, after the 1-1 draw with Juventus, at the Estádio José Alvalade, the coach stated that Sporting will probably not reach the “minimum objectives” set for this season and that, therefore, “it is difficult” to justify continuity in the club.
