Evenepoel is first pink jersey and Almeida third in the Tour of Italy

Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) is the first leader of the 106th Tour of Italy, having won the time trial of the opening stage, in which the Portuguese João Almeida (United Arab Emirates) was third.

The long-distance world champion and winner of the 2022 Vuelta covered the 19.6-kilometer time trial between Fossacesia and Ortona in 21.18 minutes, leaving the Italian ‘specialist’ Filippo Ganna (INEOS), who had never lost a ‘chrono’ in the Giro, in second position, 22 seconds. Almeida completed the ‘podium’ of the first stage, 29 seconds behind, with the differences registered at the finish line being the same as in the general classification.

Evenepoel, 23, will start dressed in pink for the second stage, a 201-kilometre route between Teramo and San Salvo, already 43 seconds ahead of the other great candidate, the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), who was it only ranked sixth.
