An attempt to let massive supporters into a football stadium in El Salvador caused at least 12 deaths and dozens of injuries on Saturday night in the quarterfinal between Alianza and FAS, of the First Division of that Central American country.
The desperation of a group of Alianza supporters to enter the stadium led them to break open a gate, resulting in approximately 500 people being crushed and suffocated.
According to Luis Alonso Amaya, director of the National System of Civil Protection, the confusion will have been caused by the sale of too many tickets.
Ten minutes into the game, warning cries rang out from the stands of the stadium. Minutes later, desperation began to mount and several fans entered the field, forcing the game to be interrupted.
According to local authorities, the incident killed 12 people and left nearly 100 people crushed and without oxygen.
Nayib Bukele, president of El Salvador, said an investigation would be launched into what happened at the Cuscatlán stadium, in the Salvadoran capital. “Everyone will be investigated: teams, directors, stadium, box office, league, federation, etc. Whoever is guilty, they will not go unpunished,” he said in a message on the Twitter network.
The football match has been canceled due to the incident.
