A 15-year-old German footballer died this Wednesday after brain injuries suffered on Sunday in an international tournament match with the French from Metz, and after clashes between players from the two teams, in Germany.
“Following the clashes on Sunday (…) the 15-year-old teenager died in hospital, after suffering severe brain injuries,” German police said in a statement today.
Initially, the information advanced by several local press outlets, from Frankfurt, Germany, reported that the player was brain dead, the product of blows to the head and neck.
The player, from the JFC Berlin team, became unconscious and had to be revived, being transferred to the hospital, where he was soon determined to be brain dead.
The alleged attacker, from the French team, was heard by the authorities, although Metz already clarified on Monday that, according to him, there was no deliberate intention to cause harm.
The 16-year-old is in custody, added the Frankfurt police, while the investigation of the events continues and the result of the autopsy is awaited, which will be carried out in the coming days.
The spokeswoman for the Frankfurt Prosecutor’s Office, Nadja Niesen, explained that the teenager who died was kept on artificial life until today so that his organs could be donated.
