FPF wants new external entity to manage arbitration in professional football

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) on Tuesday proposed the creation of an outside entity to manage arbitration in professional sports leagues, which would require changes to the rules governing the management of the arbitration function in force.

The aim of the proposal, can be read in a statement from that entity based in Oeiras, district of Lisbon, is to create “a new response” to this task and bring this external entity closer to the model “that is already happening in other countries”.

This, in the opinion of the FPF, allows “legal tools and mechanisms to be used that guarantee the composition and development of the most appropriate refereeing team”.

Given the current legal framework, he warns, “it will be necessary to study the amendment of the main rules governing the management of the arbitration function”, creating a working group led by the chairman of the Arbitration Board (CA) of the FPF. .

The Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) and the Portuguese Association of Football Referees (APAF) will also be there, being “immediately invited”, with the FPF informing the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports and federative members.

“The Board of the FPF understands that the Board of Arbitration and Arbitration enjoys the freedom and independence necessary for the normal functioning of professional competitions,” the note read.

Despite the suggestion to create a new outside entity, management believes “that the collective work of the CA members and arbitration teams has been able to improve the industry,” suggesting changes because it is “always available for new solutions and ideas”.
