Any outside entity in the arbitration will go through legislative scrutiny

The proposal by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) to create an outside entity to manage arbitration in professional leagues will pass legislative scrutiny, the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports (SEJD) stressed on Wednesday.

“If passed, the proposal will obey legislative intervention, not only by the government, but also by the Assembly of the Republic. It is important that all players in the sport speak out. I believe that this is also in the interest of the FPF is.” public debate is very important and the government will remain attentive”guaranteed João Paulo Correia.

The official spoke to journalists outside the Telles law firm in Porto, speaking at the “Legal Regime of Sports Societies” conference, a day after the “new response” to the arbitration revealed by the Portuguese football regulatory body.

“What is the purpose? You will have to put that question to the FPF. What I must convey truthfully is that I took it yesterday [terça-feira] knowledge of the proposal, which will be analyzed with great attention and care and will have implications from a legislative point of view,” he reiterated.

In a statement, the FPF admitted that the existence of an external entity in that sector, as “is already the case in other countries”, allows the use of “legal instruments and mechanisms that ensure the establishment and development of the most appropriate board of umpires.”.

The body chaired by Fernando Gomes has informed its members and the Secretary of State for Youth Affairs and Sports of this intention and will immediately invite the Portuguese Professional Football Federation (LPFP) and the Portuguese Association of Football Referees (APAF) to join a working group which will be led by the Chairman of the Board of Arbitration (CA) and will be supported by the legal leadership of the FPF.

Despite proposing an external entity, FPF management states that “the collective work of the CA members and the arbitration teams has been able to improve the industry”, suggesting changes as it is “always available for new solutions and ideas”.
