Benfica hires American defender Joshua Wynder

North American defender Joshua Wynder, just 18 years old, will join Benfica’s secondary team, the national football champion announced in a statement, without disclosing the length of the contract.

“Joshua Liam Wynder, an 18-year-old central defender, was signed by Sport Lisboa e Benfica. Born in the United States of America, he was recruited by Louisville City FC, where he did all his training, and will join the red B team”, can be read in the note issued by the “eagles” on the official website.

Considered the best young player of the year in the USL Championship in 2022, the young defender was happy to sign for Benfica, known “for the way he helps players grow”.

“It’s a great club, with great supporters. I needed a club that would help me develop and Benfica is a club known for the work done with young people and the way it helps players grow” said Wynder, quoted by the club as “incarnated.”

Wynder played a total of 45 games for the Louisville City main team and made his debut at just 16 years old.
