US Olympic sprinter died in childbirth

Olympic medalist and former world champion in the 100 meters Tori Bowie has died of complications in the final stages of her pregnancy, according to an autopsy report released by US media on Monday.

Bowie, 32, was found dead at her home in Orange County, Florida, in early May.

According to USA Today, the Orange County Medical Examiner’s office found that Bowie was eight months pregnant and in labor at the time of her death.

The report indicates that officials believe Bowie may have developed complications such as breathing difficulties and problems related to high blood pressure, which cause seizures.

The news of Bowie’s death has plunged the athletics world into mourning.

Bowie helped the US team win the gold medal in the 4×100-meter relay at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, where the sprinter also won a silver medal in the 100-meter and bronze in the 200-meter.

In addition, Bowie won the 100m world title at the London Worlds in 2017 and remains the only American athlete to win an Olympic or world 100m title since Carmelita Jeter in 2011.
