Google closes Stadia, its “video game Netflix”, due to lack of customers

The video game streaming service will be shut down in January 2023. Players will receive a refund for their purchases.

It is a service that will not have found its audience. Three years after its launch, Stadia will soon close its doors, Google announced in a press release. The company had made a strong commitment to this “cloud gaming” service, video game streaming, by subscription. For ten euros a month, players have access to a catalog of games that they can play remotely, without installation.

Stadia’s main strength is to offer a gaming experience without having to buy a dedicated console or PC, for example with a simple smartphone, but also through a Chromecast, Google’s accessory to connect your television.

As specified by the company, Stadia will close its doors permanently on January 18, 2023. Customers who have purchased dedicated hardware (such as the Stadia controller) through the Google Store will receive a full refund of their purchases. In the same way as those who have spent money to buy games (not included in the subscription) or additional content within the service.
