Starting in 2023, Google’s new “Results About You” tool will notify the user and allow them to quickly initiate a removal request if personal information appears in search results. This refers to personal information such as phone number, email address or home address. Until now, you had to search manually.
All the information that Google can detect to the extent that the users of its services -starting with the Gmail messaging service- provide it.
Remove from list, but don’t delete
However, it should be noted that Google will only remove the search results, not the content of the site itself, as it does not have access to it. The information will still be available on the site that hosts it, but it will be harder to find.
The reporting tool makes it easy for the user to submit a withdrawal request, much easier to access than today. “Results about you” also tracks these requests.
In a tweet, the company indicates that it will also offer a notification system to alert a user when their contact information is published on a referenced website. An option that can be useful for people who hold exposed positions or who are the target of harassment campaigns.
Google has allowed people to request removal of this information from search results for some time now, but with this new tool it is working to make the procedure much easier to access.
