It was the sacred date of the entire video game industry. The E3, of “Electronic entertainment expo” (electronic entertainment exhibition), a show that has been held since 1995 in Los Angeles, is not taking place this year and could well take time to return to its usual form.
At the end of March, the organizers had already announced their decision to cancel this 2023 edition, due to the growing lack of interest in the event in recent years.
It is for this very reason that the show is clearly not expected to return, at least until 2025, and especially in Los Angeles. The tourism department of the Californian city includes in its annual report the cancellation of the 2024 and 2025 editions of the fair, according to official documents released by the specialized media The Verge.
A format that no longer convinces
After record attendance in 2018, the show was strongly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, and subsequently failed to convince, despite the establishment of a digital edition in 2021. In addition, weighty pillars of the video game, such as Nintendo or Microsoft, had had announced that they preferred to hold side events on their side.
A growing lack of interest in the “physical” format, but also the success of numerous fairs and parallel events, ended up defeating this “great mass” of video games.
At the same time, numerous exhibitions and festivals related to video games have been born in recent years, such as the Summer Game Fest that was held in early June. But most of them now take place online.
