Contactless payment is going up a notch. Widely democratized with the pandemic, this payment via an NFC chip now accounts for more than one in two card payments at points of sale, according to the Banque de France.
Good news, the technology will be entitled to an update in the coming years, in particular to increase the payment distance. The NFC Forum, the global body that standardizes the system among different players, has presented its roadmap for 2028.
And one of the main measures is to increase the payment distance from 0.5 centimeters to 3 centimeters. The difference may not sound huge, but it will drastically reduce payment failures and, in a very concrete way, make transactions truly contactless.
Turn your smartphone into a payment terminal
Another novelty will be to be able to transform any smartphone into a payment terminal, such as Apple’s Tap to Pay, which allows you to pay directly from one iPhone to another, without going through a conventional terminal. On this occasion, I would open this field of application to Android smartphones.
NFC (Near-Field Communication) technology is included in both bank cards and smartphones to allow transactions, whether bank or not. Currently, contactless credit card payments are limited to 50 euros.
