“Don’t give up on the real world”: When Nikon mocks AI imagers

Nikon’s latest ad campaign tackles artificial intelligence. The device manufacturer imagines prompts and places them on actual photos.

“Don’t give up on the real world.” In his latest ad campaign, Nikon attacks artificial intelligence and the image generators derived from it. So often fake photos are passed off as real, the camera manufacturer has chosen to do the opposite.

With a series of surprising but real shots, the company had fun imagining the (“quick”) requests that could have led to this result. Above all, Nikon has been careful to leave this phrase, used to make requests within the AI software, in the center of the image.

Marvel at the real world

Thus, the mountainous reliefs of the Coyote Buttes on the Colorado Plateau in the United States are shown behind a strange request: “Imagine a café-au-lait skatepark in the middle of a desert on Mars.” The experience is repeated in half a dozen photographs.

Nikon’s ad campaign is called “Natural Intelligence” and opposes artificial intelligence. In Hueco, the manufacturer criticizes a society stuck on its screens to the detriment of the astonishment that the real world can cause.

However, the company hasn’t always been opposed to artificial intelligence. A few weeks ago, the Nikon Film Festival caused controversy by rewarding a short film made from images generated with the Midjourney software.
