Mastodon registers 110,000 new users after Twitter restrictions

The micro-blogging platform has seen many accounts created after Twitter limited the number of posts viewable in a day.

It is the platform in which the disappointed of Twitter take refuge. Once again, Elon Musk’s actions have benefited Mastodon. By limiting the number of posts visible on Twitter, the owner of the social network has thrown a new wave of people into the arms of his competitor.

Towards a future drop in active users?

Thus, the weekend was a busy one for the Mastodon teams. In recent posts, Eugen Rochko congratulated his team for managing to maintain the app’s infrastructure in the face of this massive influx of new users.

However, if the misadventures of Twitter regularly offer newcomers to Mastodon, the platform struggles to keep them. As the specialized site Wired reported in February, the meteoric arrival of people at the end of 2022 resulted in a slow drop in active users after a peak of activity in December.

It remains to be seen if the temporary measures taken by Elon Musk will be enough for Mastodon to see its newcomers stay permanently on its platform. Plus, regulars at Mastodon, which has been around since 2016, didn’t think the trend was going to take hold permanently.
