LFI MP wants to ban police spying on sex toys

The debate concerned a new law that allows French authorities, in certain cases, to spy on suspects’ smartphones and other connected devices.

“We deeply disagree”: in front of the Assembly, the rebel deputy Ugo Bernalicis defended Tuesday night with panache the right to privacy, seeking to exclude … “snitch” sex toys in investigations.

“You are going too far, you have no limits” and “you are on a slippery slope in terms of surveillance”, launched the elected representative of the North to the Minister of Justice, to laughter from the audience.

Being able to capture sound and images of the connected sexual object of a person under investigation, or geolocate through said object: this “is not provided, especially when looking at the duration of the measurement, which can be up to 15 days”. he continued without blinking.

An absence of set “boundaries”

“Minister Bruno Le Maire could give us many details,” added his LFI colleague Andy Kerbrat, referring to the recent work of the Bercy tenant, which includes scenes with alleged eroticism.

The deputies were debating a controversial article of the justice programming bill, which should allow, among other things, the remote activation of computers, telephones and other connected devices without the knowledge of the interested parties, in investigations of terrorism, delinquency and organized crime. .

The left opposes this activation device, but has not succeeded in suppressing it. Wanting to draw attention to the absence of set “limits”, Ugo Bernalicis introduced an “alternative” amendment to exclude sex toys.

But “how can we have ideas like these?” Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti blurted out, speaking of a “bad taste” amendment. “I don’t know what we can capture” as sound and images, he swept away. And to throw Ugo Bernalicis: “Parliament deserves better than its usual circus.”

The rapporteur Erwan Balanant (MoDem) addressed it “a fantasy amendment” from the LFI deputy. It was rejected by 119 votes in favor, 30 against and two abstentions.
