Europe will be able to have its ChatGPT “within five years”, says Bruno Le Maire

For the Minister of Economy, artificial intelligence would make it possible to reactivate the productivity of a “sleepy” European economy.

The French Economy Minister considered this Saturday possible that the European Union would build “within five years” its own generative artificial intelligence (AI) system that, according to him, will help improve the productivity of a “languid” economy. .

“A European OpenAI in five years”

“L’intelligence artificielle générative va nous permettre, pour la première fois depuis plusieurs générations, de retrouver de la productivité, d’être plus efficace”, a lance Bruno Le Maire aux Rencontres économiques d’Aix-en-Provence, dans le sud from France.

“I advocate, therefore, before laying the foundations for the regulation of artificial intelligence, that we innovate, invest and set ourselves the goal of having a European OpenAI within five years, with the necessary calculators, scientists and algorithms. It is possible,” he added.

It is science “that will finally allow us to gain productivity in a somewhat languid European economy”, more “twisted” than the “TGV”, he insisted.

AI in full democratization

In mid-June, the minister had already insisted on the need for the EU to “invest and innovate” to develop artificial intelligence systems, before “regulating” US technologies, at the risk of losing its “independence”.

The general public discovered the immense potential of artificial intelligence systems at the end of 2022 with the launch of the ChatGPT editorial content generator from the Californian company OpenAI, which can write essays, poems or translations in seconds.

But the spread on social networks of false images, more real than life, created from applications such as Midjourney, has alerted to the risks of manipulation of opinion and the dangers for democracy.

The European Parliament approved a draft AI regulation in June and the EU hopes to conclude before the end of the year the world’s first regulation aimed at regulating and protecting innovation in this strategic sector.
