Samsung is reviewing its plans. The electronics giant, which was originally due to ship its first mixed reality headset in February 2024, has decided to postpone its launch by two quarters, reports South Korean outlet SBZ Biz. According to the latter, this decision is motivated by the formalization, last June, of Apple’s mixed reality viewer: the Vision Pro.
Considered the “One More Thing” of Apple WWDC Developer Conference Last June, the product of the Cupertino company, which presents it as a “space computer”, caused a sensation. Result: Samsung would have informed its partners of a delay in the production of its own helmet in order to rethink and refine the device with respect to the specifics of the Vision Pro. The South Korean company now expects a launch for the second half of 2024.
The Vision Pro, an expensive helmet to manufacture
Samsung is, for the time being, low-key about the features of its headphones that it is developing in partnership with chip founder Qualcomm and Google. On the competition side, Meta presented its Meta Quest 3 virtual reality headset last June, which should hit the market in the fall of 2023. The American company assures that it will be “40% thinner than its predecessor and more comfortable”.
For its part, Apple has not announced any delay for its headphones scheduled for early 2024. However, the company led by Tim Cook had to stop the development of a cheaper similar model and also review the declines in the production capacities of the Vision. Pro.
Apple planned to produce a million in 2024. Eventually it will be 400,000, reports Financial Time. At issue: the expensive cost of producing the headset, particularly its extremely expensive micro-OLED displays. The Vision Pro will start at $3,500.
