Apple boss isn’t sold on Facebook’s metaverse

Tim Cook believes that the project presented by Facebook is still too vague for the general public and that the uses of virtual reality are limited.

The approach is not openly directed at Facebook, but the message is clear. During a visit to Italy, Tim Cook, who has been at the helm of Apple for more than ten years, spoke about the great technological developments ahead. When asked about the metaverse concept, introduced by Facebook to diversify, he is skeptical to say the least.

For now, the metaverse remains a concept that does not have a precise definition. For major players in the field, like Facebook, the metaverse takes the form of a virtual reality video game, simulating a day at work or having fun with other gamers online. Mark Zuckerberg’s company is also due to unveil a new virtual reality headset on October 11.

“Not a good way to communicate”

Still with RTL Nieuws, Tim Cook also believes that, contrary to Facebook’s hopes, customers are unlikely to spend the day in this virtual world to interact with each other.

As I had already mentioned several times, the head of Apple is, on the other hand, determined to invest in the universe of augmented reality. Unlike virtual reality headsets, which simulate a completely 3D environment, augmented reality headsets add, by transparency, graphic elements in front of the user’s eyes.

For Tim Cook, augmented reality will have an impact comparable to the arrival of the smartphone, and “it will have effects in all areas”. A way to prepare for the arrival of a possible augmented reality helmet signed by Apple, regularly mentioned by specialists?
