Hawaii: how Apple’s emergency call system saved a family from the fires

The family could be located by the emergency services with a real-time conversation with the emergency services, possible thanks to the satellite calls offered by Apple.

As the flames ravaged certain islands of Hawaii and caused the death of more than 90 people, some people managed to escape the flames, thanks to their iPhone.

On Twitter, now X, a user recounted how family members had been able to save themselves from the flames using the emergency call service on Apple’s smartphone, which allows emergencies to be contacted in a place without network coverage.

“Advise us please”

In a screenshot received by one of the emergency contacts of the person caught in the flames, we can discover the conversation between the emergency services and the victim.

In fact, the emergency contacts selected in the iPhone’s medical history can receive the victim’s answers to the emergency questionnaire, a map showing their position and messages exchanged with the emergency services.

Here, for example, you can find out the details of the situation, in particular the number of passengers and the location.

The two parties exchanged for several minutes to indicate on the one hand the evolution of their position and the situation and on the other where to go to find the nearest firefighters. A tool that will therefore allow, at 6:45 p.m. local time, after more than 30 minutes of conversation, to rescue the five occupants of the vehicle safe and sound.

Only available on iPhone 14

Please note that this satellite emergency call feature is only available to people with an iPhone 14 and an iPhone 14 Pro. A use that also continues depending on where you are.

On its site, Apple specifies that sending and receiving messages works “differently than using a cellular connection.”

“Under ideal conditions with a clear view of the sky and horizon, it can take 15 seconds to send a message, and more than a minute if you are under trees with light to medium-dense foliage or in an area surrounded by obstacles. your device cannot connect to a satellite.

To avoid disappointment in an emergency, Apple has organized a demo of the feature. To do this, go to the iPhone settings, and then to the “Emergency calls” tab. Under ‘Satellite Emergency SOS’, tap ‘Try Demo’, then follow the on-screen instructions. A demo that will allow you to understand how the tool works, without having to ask for help.
