Do not lack anything to be able to play in a healthy environment. This has been Xbox’s wish for its gaming community for years. The American console manufacturer has multiplied the settings in the past to prevent harmful behavior in chats, harassment or cheating.
In 2022, Xbox explains that it temporarily sanctioned less than 1% of players and only a third of them received a second warning. “Players often stop inappropriate behavior after a warning, quickly learning what is and isn’t acceptable by Xbox community standards,” McCarthy said.
But that doesn’t stop some from continuing. So Microsoft’s gaming arm is stepping up the pace by rolling out a new, much more deterrent penalty system to its consoles.
An eight-point “permission”
Earlier this week, Xbox’s vice president of player services outlined in a blog post the system that aims to educate gamers about the seriousness of the upcoming penalties for their online status and participation.
And this will be done gradually to do, above all, prevention and clarification. But nothing will be without consequences if the players are not able to interact in a respectful way. “Everyone deserves a place to feel comfortable online, free from bullying and bullying,” he wrote.
The new system will thus take intensified measures against repeated behavior, with repercussions on the game and the ability to play correctly online. This will also allow affected players to know the extent of the sanction applied and when they will be back in order.
For this, the sanctioning system will have eight levels, with severities adapted according to the offending conduct. Each player will also have a global vision of the sanction, the reason and the impact, as a personal record to also understand what is being blamed in order to get to know him better and adjust his behaviour. Various penalties can be combined and increase the impact to the player.
Xbox advises that this will not change the efforts made in the continued moderation of chats and exchanged content.
How will this work?
A player can report inappropriate behavior of another player. The report is evaluated by the Xbox teams that decide the sanction to take. If the infraction is proven, a sanction is decided according to the severity, in the form of the points withdrawn from the driving license. The target player can still appeal.
A sanctioned player can be banned from playing online for one day after two warnings, one week after observing four violations. After eight bans, all social features (messaging, chat, party, multiplayer, etc.) will be removed for one year. But solo play is still accessible. However, it will take six months to find a “license to play” free of background checks.
The system takes effect immediately. This does not exclude the possibility of permanent suspension of an account that engages in illegal behavior on the platform.
