Fires in Canada: Justin Trudeau accuses Facebook of having blocked information

Since August 1 in Canada, Facebook has been blocking access to media content, in response to a law that requires digital giants to enter into commercial agreements with publishers.

On August 21, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized Facebook owner Meta for blocking the delivery of national news to its Canadian users as the country battles the worst wildfires on record.

For the Prime Minister, it is crucial to have up-to-date information in times of crisis. Justin Trudeau’s criticism of Meta is the latest government attack on the US social media giant.

This month, Meta began blocking the distribution of newsgroup news on its Facebook and Instagram platforms for all Canadian users, in response to a new law requiring digital giants to pay for news. This ban was already criticized by members of the government last week, who described it as reckless and irresponsible.

“Billions of dollars behind the backs of Canadians”

Some people fleeing the wildfires have complained to the national media that the blockade of Meta prevents them from sharing important data about the fires.

Meta was not immediately available for comment.

A company spokesperson previously stressed that Canadians can still access information from official government agencies, emergency services and non-governmental organizations on the platform.

Facebook has also enabled the “Safety Checkup” feature that allows users to let people know they are safe after a natural disaster or crisis.
