YouTube: the button meant to pass the ad could become… smaller

In order to force users to watch ads as much as possible, YouTube may soon make the skip button less accessible.

YouTube wants you to see the ads correctly, but a little less the button to skip them. The video platform thus launches new screens that little by little will be extended to all users, including videos with rounded corners, as The Verge points out.

But the most notable new feature is the redesigned “Skip Ads” button, a company spokesperson confirmed to Search Engine Land media. Therefore, this new version, currently in testing, could soon be rolled out to all users.

more transparency

Gone is the rectangular and quite visible button located at the bottom right when an ad is launched (when it is not “non-skippable”): now the button is rounded and, above all, much more transparent, so that it is barely noticeable on the video.

In detail, the word “Ads” (in the English version “Skip Ads”) has also been written in full lowercase and the general button has been reduced from the previous one.

Choice of viewing or subscription

For YouTube, the goal is officially “to deliver a more consistent user experience, consistent with the new look of YouTube announced last year.” In fact, the platform has reworked certain aspects of the site and the application, such as the arrival of the zoom in the videos and more contrasting color themes.

Unofficially, though, the reason for changing the skip button has much less to do with aesthetics. By reducing the visibility of the button, as expected, users of the platform will be less willing to skip the ads.

In this way, if users are really tired of seeing these ads, an equally profitable solution for YouTube is possible: subscribe, for 12.99 euros per month, to YouTube Premium. The paid subscription service to the platform allows you to completely get rid of ads on the platform.

A way for YouTube to retain its economic model in all cases, which is essentially based on advertising. The platform has also decided to block access to Internet users who use an ad blocker, through a pop-up window that cannot be closed for at least 30 seconds.
