“A new product that I am very excited about!” In X, ex-Twitter Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, praises his new gem. This Tuesday, October 21, the startup presented its web browser powered by artificial intelligence, called ChatGPT Atlas.
At OpenAI, it all started with a simple question: “What would it be like to be able to chat with your browser?” A lot of things, according to the company, which ensures that Atlas gives the impression of “not using a browser like any other.”
As for the design, nothing revolutionary. Atlas looks like Google Chrome, which is to be expected since it appears to use Chromium, like many of its competitors. We therefore find the same type of layout for the tabs and the search bar. The home page allows you to talk directly to ChatGPT.
It is in its operation where Atlas brings novelty. Here it is no longer up to the user to move from one page to another or copy and paste text, but ChatGPT responds and anticipates requests.
ChatGPT Agent, ChatGPT in action
With ChatGPT Atlas, ChatGPT, as you would expect, is the default search engine. Atlas also offers a bar called “request to ChatGPT”. It allows you to ask the chatbot to interact with, summarize or research a page. All without leaving the page.
ChatGPT can, for example, copy/paste text and takes care of tab juggling. Even when you click on links, ChatGPT is still accessible through a vertical bar on the right. The goal? That the assistant is always just a click away if necessary.
The browser can also have ChatGPT memory, capable of better understanding the user and based on history to personalize results. Internet users can, for example, ask them to search for a specific page. ChatGPT should find you quickly.
The ChatGPT agent has also been integrated into the browser. This technology is capable of performing actions on behalf of the user. For example, it allows you to fill out forms, reserve a restaurant or even complete a spreadsheet by accessing online information. This feature is currently only available in preview for Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers.
When it comes to privacy, OpenAI ensures that internet users will be in control. They will be able to delete their history or use the browser in incognito mode. Atlas memory must also be enabled, during initial setup or later, and can be managed at any time in setup. Finally, by default, navigation content is not used to train the startup’s models.
In other words, just as it is possible to entrust ChatGPT with the responsibility of creating computer code, we can entrust OpenAI’s artificial intelligence with the management of certain boring tasks in our lives. Like ordering food according to a recipe, if we believe a demonstration by Sam Altman’s company equipment.
The browser is available worldwide on macOS. Windows, iOS, and Android users will have to wait a little longer before trying ChatGPT Atlas.
By launching its own AI browser, OpenAI moves even closer to Google. Since the launch of ChatGPT, more and more internet users are turning to the chatbot instead of the search engine for their queries. Since December 2024, the startup also offers its own search engine, ChatGPT Search. Last April it already had more than 40 million users in Europe alone.
