Elon Musk uses his smartphone while driving his Tesla, but escapes a fine

In California, a police officer must record these types of crimes. Which was not the case during Elon Musk’s move to Palo Alto.

This August 26, Elon Musk is recorded driving his Tesla in Palo Alto, California, to stage the autonomous mode of the vehicle. During the 45-minute sequence, the head of the company – and of Twitter/X – had to urgently regain control of the vehicle and once again attacked Mark Zuckerberg. Above all, he was committing a crime by driving with a smartphone in hand.

But as the American site The Verge reminds us, you won’t be worried. Since no officer witnessed the action at the time it occurred, there is no penalty under California law. Had that been the case, Elon Musk would have been fined $20 if caught red-handed for a first offense, and $50 for a repeat offense.

no police witness

Technically, the fine can only be imposed if a police officer can tell a judge what he saw, verify the identity of the driver and his driver’s license, and take the license plate.

Last June, the US federal government was continuing its investigation into sixteen accidents involving Tesla vehicles using Autopilot and, in particular, colliding with emergency vehicles, resulting in a total of 15 injuries and one death. .
