Google launches its Pixel 7, the (much more affordable) competitors of the iPhone 14

Google has announced its Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, its next-generation smartphones that once again rely on photography and multiple functions powered by artificial intelligence.

They had already said hello just after the previous Google conference, now they are officially here: the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro were announced on Thursday at an event in New York. These 100% Google smartphones inside and out once again bet on photography and their own know-how in artificial intelligence. And especially at prices much lower than those of the iPhone.

After the acclaimed Pixel 6, the Pixel 7 Pro is particularly expected on the turn. And therefore, Google has changed at full speed in all sectors. In the first place at the level of autonomy, often the weak point of its previous models. The Mountain View giant promises more than a day of autonomy in standard use and up to 72 hours thanks to the arrival of an Ultra Battery Saver mode (several functions and 5G disabled). That will be needed to support improvements, particularly in terms of photography and video.

The photo at the heart of a 100% Google smartphone

In terms of design, the Pixel 7 Pro offers a 6.7-inch OLED screen with an image refresh rate of up to 120 Hz and made of ultra-scratch-resistant glass. On the back, there are three larger photosensors to capture more light, including a 50MP main sensor, a telephoto lens (48MP) with 5x optical zoom, and a 30x high-resolution digital zoom. This should allow for extremely sharp photos even from a distance. The ultra wide angle with autofocus (field of view of 125.8 ° – 12 Mpx) has been improved and also allows macro photography.

On the front, both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro feature the same 10MP camera (which helps with facial recognition). As with the latest iPhones, it’s also possible to use Cinematic Blur in video (choose to shoot with a blur in the foreground or in the background). A champion of night photography and portraiture, the Pixel 7/7 Pro is also enriched with a Real Tone function to make differences in skin tone more realistic.

Once again, the contribution of AI in the photo proposed by Google will make itself felt with many enhancement tools (Motion or Face mode, magic eraser), but also the anti-blur function to catch up with your photo failures ( old and new) , and better help you frame a scene correctly. For the visually impaired in particular, audio or haptic cues can help with taking selfies.

Inside the Pixel 7 Pro and its little brother there is a chip designed entirely by Google, the Tensor G2 accompanied by the Titan M2 security chip to better protect the device. Note that Google doesn’t specify which version of Android the Pixel 7 will work with. In any case, they will support Wi-Fi 6e and Bluetooth 5.2.

But the strength of the Google Pixel is also the multiple functions of the home to help on a daily basis. Written transcription of voice messages that can be read more easily, automatic translation or voice dictation now available in French.

The Pixel 7, the good alternative

The Pixel 7 follows the same recipe as the Pixel 7 Pro with obviously some compromises to sweeten the price. First of all in terms of design, it changes the polished aluminum of the chassis for matt. But like its companion, it’s designed for durability and aesthetics, made in part from recycled materials. Both are also resistant to dust and water thanks to their IP68 certification.

But the proposal is also visually different. The Pixel 7 is a bit more compact and lighter, sporting a 6.3-inch OLED display, with a 90Hz refresh rate.

It only has two photosensors on the back (same main sensor, but an ultra wide angle without autofocus and with a field of view of only 114 °). On the charging side, the two devices show the same speed: 50% autonomy recovered in 30 minutes (with the 30W Google charger not included…).

Price and availability of Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro

The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are now available for pre-order on the Google site and at partner resellers from €649 for the Pixel 7 (128GB) and €899 for the Pixel 7 Pro (128GB). Prices much lower than those of the iPhone 14 (1019 euros) and iPhone 14 Pro (1329 euros). They will go on sale in a few weeks. They are available in Volcanic Black, Snow, Lime Green (Pixel 7) or Sage Green (Pixel 7 Pro), in 128GB and 256GB.
