Political ads run by Google will soon have to clearly indicate whether an artificial intelligence (AI) tool has been used in their design, the US giant announced on Wednesday, September 6.
This decision by the world’s number one digital advertising company comes at a time when the rapid development of AI is raising fears about its potential misuse, particularly in the campaign for the 2024 US presidential election.
A “clear and clearly visible” statement
The group sells advertising space on its own websites and apps and acts as an intermediary between advertisers who want to place their ads online and the third-party websites or apps that display them.
Google already prohibits, in the ads it manages through its platforms, manipulations of digital content intended to mislead about political issues and ads that contain false statements that could undermine trust in the electoral system.
Starting in November, political ads will have to “clearly state” whether they contain “artificially created content” that depicts real or life-like people or events, according to Google. The Californian giant clarified that it continues to invest in order to better detect and eliminate these elements.
The mention must be “clear and clearly visible,” Google warned, including examples of possible notices: “this image does not depict a real event” or “this video was artificially generated.”
In early July, the endorsement committee of Ron DeSantis, a candidate for the Republican primary in the United States, had caused controversy by using a fake voice of Donald Trump generated by an AI and similar to that of the former president in an advertisement. .
