In testing for over a year, the France Identity app is now accessible to everyone. It appeared in the Apple and Google app stores this Thursday night, September 7. Thanks to it, it is possible to create a digital copy of your identity card.
The objective of the application, developed by the French government, is to allow holders of the new identity document to authenticate themselves online when browsing the Internet. The promise is to be able to connect to public or private services thanks to France Identity.
Avoid identity theft
Despite its official launch, the possibilities remain limited for the moment. But the uses of the application should multiply in the coming weeks and months. At least that’s what the roadmap presented by France Identité in May promises.
Currently, users can create single-use credentials. This allows the generation of documents that prove the identity of a person to carry out procedures or create a file (to rent an apartment, for example). This option has the advantage of making the sent document obsolete after a previously chosen period.
Because this is the challenge of France Idité: to protect a citizen’s personal information as best as possible to limit the risks of theft as much as possible. In this way, the application can be used to connect to certain sites through FranceConnect. This tool allows a person to be authenticated using secure identifiers such as those of the site “impots.gouv.fr” or the “digital identity” offered by La Poste.
In the future, France Identity should also support FranceConnect+, the new version of the authentication service, which offers improved security. But no date has been announced yet.
The driving license will soon be dematerialized
Another project, the possibility of making powers without going to the gendarmerie or the police station. An experiment is planned in Rhône, Hauts-de-Seine and Eure-et-Loir on the occasion of the European elections on June 9, 2024. This approach could therefore be carried out entirely online.
In addition, France Identity is willing to accept other official documents. Since September, the integration of the driving license has been tested, also in the departments of Rhône, Hauts-de-Seine and Eure-et-Loir. The generalization planned for the beginning of next year should authorize citizens to present their smartphone during a roadside check or car rental.
For its part, the Vitale card has had a specific application since the end of July. But Gabriel Attal’s statements in May suggest an integration into France Identity.
The then Minister of Action and Public Accounts assured that the government’s plans included the fusion of the Vitale card with the identity card. Without a clear explanation or even a planned experimental window, it is not possible to know whether this merger of physical cards will extend to a grouping of the France Identity and Carte Vitale applications.
