While you wait for iOS 17, the new update for your iPhone won’t offer you anything new, other than better protection. Available last night, it fixes a major flaw exploited by the world’s most famous spyware, Pegasus.
This version 16.6.1 is a consequence of a discovery made by researchers at Citizen Lab. The flaw allows anyone to take possession of your iPhone remotely, using a simple image sent to iMessage.
iPhones are not the only ones affected. The update also affects Macs, Watches and iPads.
Developed by the Israeli company NSO, Pegasus made headlines in 2021 when a consortium of 17 media outlets led by the NGO Forbidden Stories and Amnesty International revealed the hidden side of a global cyberespionage affair.
The software was targeted at many French people, including the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron.
