Xiaomi, Samsung, Nokia… the list of smartphones accused before the iPhone 12 of emitting too many waves

Since 2012, ANFR has tested nearly 900 devices to check their wave emission level. About fifty failed.

Intense week for Apple, which presented its iPhone 15, while having to manage a French crisis in relation to the iPhone 12, whose radio emissions exceeded the regulatory threshold.

In the case of Apple, it is the “member” DAS that will have to be fixed in an update. It corresponds to the measurement of wave emissions when the device is held in the hand. The “main” DAS is compliant, as is the “backbone” DAS. Two figures linked to the use of the mobile phone near the ear or torso.

Before Apple, the National Frequency Agency, in charge of these controls on the wave emission levels of smartphones on the market, periodically pointed out competing brands. Since 2012, their site has tested almost 900 devices. Among them, 43 “did not comply” with the regulations.

In France, the SAR limit for “extremities” is set at 4 W/kg, compared to 2 W/kg for the SAR for “trunk” and “head.”

Xiaomi and Nokia are attacked regularly

In the vast majority of cases, excess wave emissions affected the “trunk” and “extremity” SARs. However, some were fixed on these two elements at the same time, in particular three Boulanger brand devices, some of which had to be recalled, the update cannot be done remotely.

But in this area, the worst student is the Chinese Xiaomi, noted for six different models. The Redmi Note 5, launched in 2018, is also the only smartphone marketed in the French market that has been controlled with a SAR higher than the regulated one, barely exceeding 2 W/kg (2.1 W/kg). The manufacturer then carried out an update.

Nokia is also used to reprimands from the ANFR: five models have exceeded the regulatory thresholds of the “core” DAS since 2018. Thus, the Nokia 6.1 obtained 3.6 W/kg, that is, 80% emissions above the legal limit (compared to 44% for the iPhone 12, at the DAS “member” level). The record, however, is held by the discreet Allview X4 Soul mini S, with a trunk SAR of 4.6 W/kg, or 130% more than the standard.

Among the mobile phone giants we also find Samsung, which is blamed for two smartphones: the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, with a “core” SAR of 2.5 W/kg, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus, with a “Trunk” SAR of 2.5 W/kg, member” of 4.3 W/kg. Japan’s Sony was also targeted, due to a “trunk” SAR of 2.6 W/kg for its Xperia 5 , released in 2020.
