This is yet another investment by the North American giant in Portugal. Google, which last year activated “Equiano”, an undersea cable connecting Portugal with Africa, is now investing in a new connection with a fiber optic cable that crosses an ocean.
The project is called “Cloud” and it is more than just a cable. The North American technology company affirms that it is a system of submarine cables that cross the Atlantic.
The connection with the United States is not direct. From Portugal, the cable heads to a docking point in the Caribbean, specifically in the Bahamas, and then heads towards America to dock again at a cyber anchorage in the state of South Carolina.

The announcement was made this Monday by Google. The company does not reveal the value of the investment, only stating that Nuvem should be operational within three years.
The technology giant also explains that the objective of the connection is to improve the resilience of the network in the Atlantic and help respond to the growing demand for digital services.
According to Google, submarine cables bring positive impacts on trade, investment and productivity in the countries involved.
The technology also states that, “with improved Internet costs and accessibility, societies can continue to modernize: people acquire skills and knowledge that open doors to new employment opportunities, at the same time, companies and governments increase productivity through of digital transformation”.
The cloud, expected to come online in 2026, Google says, will “reinforce the intercontinental cable network,” while “bringing together people and economies around the world.”
