Apple once again stood out. European Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton called on the company to further open its software ecosystem to competitors, following a meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook on Tuesday, September 26.
“The duty of Apple and other Big Tech players, within the framework of the DMA (Digital Markets Act), is to open their doors to competitors,” Thierry Breton recalled to the Reuters agency. The recently approved DMA establishes a list of do’s and don’ts for Apple and other big tech companies to increase competition.
Thierry Breton also questioned Apple’s arguments, which states that the company must partially close its ecosystem to protect its consumers and their privacy. “EU regulations promote innovation, without compromising security and privacy,” he said. Contacted by Reuters, Apple declined to comment.
