Meta Quest 3: the mixed reality headset will arrive in October

During his Meta Connect event on Wednesday night, Mark Zuckerberg gave more information about his Meta Quest 3 mixed reality headset, which will arrive in the fall for 550 euros.

Meta Quest 3 is coming. On Wednesday afternoon during Meta Connect, Mark Zuckerberg lifted the veil on his future self-contained headset, which he wants to see as the first mixed reality headset for the general public.

A lot of information had already circulated about the successor to the Quest 2 that democratized virtual reality without a wireless connection or a computer nearby. Now we know that it will arrive on October 10 in stores and on the Meta website starting at 549.99 euros for the 128 GB version (699.99 euros with 512 GB of storage).

More powerful, more precise and more comfortable

Introduced in June to take advantage of (and counter) the announcement of Apple’s Vision Pro, the Meta Quest 3 revives the success recipe of its predecessor: autonomy, versatility and comfort. Its design has been redesigned to be slimmer. The fastening strap has been revised to facilitate adjustment and, therefore, better distribution of the weight of the helmet on the head. Gone is the monochrome side of the Quest in gray, now it is possible to combine it with a colored strap and face shield (orange, blue, white or black, optional).

Otherwise, the headset can map your space even better with its ability to detect walls, objects or furniture, both to make them interact in mixed reality and to protect you. In this way it will be possible to bounce a ball against a wall, protect yourself from enemies behind the sofa, etc. And next year comes the Augments feature: the ability to bring interactive digital objects to life based on your real environment and that can evolve.

The Meta Quest 3 will also benefit from the power of the Snapdragon XR2 gen 2 platform specially developed by Qualcomm for virtual, augmented or mixed reality. And this will have interesting consequences for users: double the power to view games and richer experiences more quickly, but also more pixels displayed on the 4K screen (+30%), with less thick glasses (pancake glasses) and sharper ones. by 25%. Audio has also been redesigned on the new headphones with a promised “40% better” sound experience. It is still possible to connect headphones through the present jack socket.

The headphone drivers have also been redesigned. The track bar disappears to make movements less difficult. The Touch Plus controllers are also enriched with the haptic system to increase immersion through sensations. As with the other two Meta headphones, manual tracking for driver-free control is still possible thanks to tracking technology.

See the outside world while you play

Like Meta Quest Pro, Quest 3 inherits the Passthrough function in color and high resolution to not lose contact with its real environment, but also to offer experiences that combine the virtual and the augmented. You can also choose your level of immersion to play and collaborate with other users. Meta announces around fifty titles taking advantage of mixed reality on the Meta Quest Store.

In addition to the more than 500 games and experiences available, Meta Quest 2 could enjoy PC virtual reality games by connecting it to a computer using a USB-C cable or Air Link technology. It will be the same for Quest 3. And this, like the rest of the products in the range, will benefit from Xbox Cloud Gaming, which will arrive in December through an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, with the use of a controller connected via Bluetooth Replace the headphone drivers.

META QUEST 3: available on October 10 from €549.99 on the Meta Store and partner resellers including Amazon and Fnac-Darty.
