The last “supermoon” of the year will be visible on Friday night

A “supermoon” will illuminate the sky overnight from Friday to Saturday. This is the last chance of the year to witness this phenomenon that has occurred several times this summer.

The last performance of a fascinating show… and free. During the night of Friday to Saturday the last supermoon of the year will take place. To admire it, nothing could be simpler: just look up.

This phenomenon can be observed when the full moon coincides with the moment when our natural satellite, which follows the path of an ellipse (an oval), is at the point of its orbit closest to the Earth, explains the site of the POT. This closest point is called perigee.

On Friday, the distance between the Moon and Earth will be around 355,000 kilometers, compared to an average of 382,900 kilometers the rest of the time. Therefore, our natural satellite will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual.

Fourth Super Moon

This supermoon, the fourth of the year, is nicknamed the “super harvest moon.” This name would have been given to it by the Native American tribes, because it is the last full moon before autumn, the time of year when crops are most abundant.

Three more supermoons occurred this summer: the Deer Moon in early July, the Sturgeon Moon in early August, and the “Super Blue Moon” in late August.

To attend the next one we will have to wait until September 2024.
