US State Department victim of cyber attack, 60,000 emails hacked

The US State Department was the target of a cyberattack during which hackers leaked 60,000 emails.

Some 60,000 emails linked to US diplomacy were hacked during a cyberattack. The latter, suspected of Chinese origin and revealed last July, targeted in particular the US State Department, his spokesperson stated on Thursday, September 27.

“During this breach, approximately 60,000 unclassified emails were leaked,” Matthew Miller said when asked about this during a press conference. He reiterated that none of the secure systems containing classified information had been compromised.

Last July, the US Government revealed the existence of this cyberattack which, according to Microsoft, had Chinese origin and was directed at federal agencies, including the State Department.

Disinformation campaign

To date, the United States has refused to attribute responsibility, but claims to have “no reason to doubt the attribution made publicly by Microsoft,” which later spoke of an actor “based in China that Microsoft calls Storm-0558.” .

At the end of May, the United States, its Western allies and Microsoft had already denounced a Chinese-sponsored “cyber actor” that had infiltrated US critical infrastructure networks.

In a State Department report published on Thursday, September 27, the United States also denounced a massive disinformation campaign by China, which threatens freedom of expression on the planet.
