The device may return to stores soon. The National Frequency Agency (ANFR) validated the iPhone 12 update proposed by Apple to reduce the device’s wave emissions, in a press release on September 29.
The agency had requested the withdrawal of the Apple smartphone from stores in mid-September, alleging that the device exceeded the limits of wave emission. Specifically, the iPhone 12 exceeds by 1.74 watts per kilogram (W/kg) the regulatory limit value corresponding to the energy that the human body can absorb when the phone is held in the hand (called SAR members).
“The tests confirm that this software development allows this device to respect the SAR limit value (…) and therefore comply with current regulations,” confirms the agency. “It is now up to Apple to distribute this software update to all iPhone 12 users so that the device meets current standards.
Apple initially challenged the ANFR measures, before announcing that an update was in the works. This greatly reduces the emissions of the iPhone 12, according to ANFR measurements: they go from 5.74 W/kg to 3.94 W/kg for DAS members, thus remaining below the 4 W/kg ceiling.
