Apple will abandon the Lightning port for USB-C by 2024. In any case, this is the thesis of Mark Gurman, a journalist from Bloomberg. According to him, the Apple brand will first integrate USB-C charging into AirPods and Mac accessories.
Affected products could be AirPods, AirPods Pro, and next-gen AirPods by 2024. Starting next year, Mac accessories like Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad could also move to USB-VS. In fact, Apple will launch its Mac lineup with a new iMac and a new Mac Pro next year, which “generally coincides with accessory updates,” notes the Bloomberg reporter.
As for iPhones, Apple technically wouldn’t have to comply with future European Union law until the iPhone 17 launches in the fall of 2025. There will be a two-year window allowing companies to transition to USB- c. but the brand is already anticipating. USB-C could appear as soon as the iPhone 15.
european directives
The disruption to Lightning technology comes as the European Union plans to make USB-C charging mandatory on new smartphones, tablets, and headsets released in Europe by the end of 2024. Although the legislation has yet to be signed, it has received approval from the European Union. Parliament last week.
The European Union is pressuring device manufacturers to unify their charging with the USB-C port for environmental and interoperability purposes.
“Apple should have switched to USB-C charging on the iPhone and other mobile devices a few years ago. After all, it switched to USB-C on some laptops in 2015 and the iPad Pro in 2018,” notes Mark Gurman.
