Favorite network of boomers, Facebook is rejected by young people

A Statista study indicates that the French use Facebook regularly… but not Generation Z.

What is the social network most used by young people? Which one wins over older users? Statista’s “Consumer Insights” study, published on Monday, October 23, analyzed the popularity of social networks that shape the daily lives of millions of French people. As expected, it reveals disparities in the habitual use of these platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, Twitter) depending on the age of the Internet users and their membership in a generation: generation Z (1995-2005). , Millennials (1980). -1994), Generation X (1965-1979) and Baby Boomers (1959-1964).

Based on 6,199 people between 18 and 64 years old, interviewed in France between July 4, 2022 and June 19, 2023, the study highlights that Facebook is the social network most used by Internet users born before 1995, i.e. , baby boomers (84%), Generation X (83%) and Millennials (81%).

Unlike Generation Z internet users: only 54% stated that they use the Meta platform at regular intervals. Which places the latter “in fourth place in this age category”, specifies Statista.

Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok in the lead among young people

Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok audiences particularly crystallize this generational gap. Unlike their elders, Generation Z gives a privileged place to Instagram, their favorite social network: almost 80% of those surveyed born between 1995 and 2005 claimed to be regular users of photo sharing app and videos.

Although more than half of Millennials regularly use the app (59%), less than 50% of Generation X respondents say they do. The figure drops to 34% among baby boomers.

The gap is also evident with Snapchat. The app is appreciated by Generation Z: 66% of respondents in this age group say they use it regularly.

On the other hand, less than half of the Millennials surveyed (41%) practice it. It’s even less for Generation X (27%) and baby boomers (17%).

Finally, Tiktok: more than half of Generation Z respondents reported using it regularly, that is, 60% of them. The figure drops directly to 37% for the age group preceding it, Millennials. This figure decreases further with Generation X (26%) and baby boomers, only 14% of whom use TikTok regularly. Only YouTube seems to be the platform used perfectly homogeneously by all generations. The same goes for Twitter, although to a lesser extent.
