Tiktok attracts 21.4 million French people every month

21.4 million French people entertain themselves every month on Tiktok, the Chinese application revealed on Tuesday

The number is dizzying. 21.4 million French people use the social network Tiktok every month. With “fashion and sewing” as her passions, the application is detailed in a press release.

He also recalled the other trends that have made the social network successful, such as #BookTok (the hashtag that brings together book and literature enthusiasts), and music, with Tiktok originally being an application dedicated to dance and musical choreography.

The hashtag #Rap, the most listened to musical genre in the country, has thus concentrated “more than 5 billion views in France and 380,000 videos published since the beginning of 2023,” the statement continues.

Tiktok, now a “very large platform”

Considered a very large platform by the European regulation on digital services (DSA) in force since August, Tiktok must now disclose certain figures and comply with new obligations.

The number of French people active each month on the platform was calculated over an average of 6 months, from April to September 2023. In comparable terms, the social network is used by 134 million people in the 27 countries of the European Union.

The company recently announced several changes in Europe: data hosting on the continent, a non-personalized news service or the end of personalized advertising for minors.

In July, a Senate inquiry commission ordered it to clarify its links with its parent company Bytedance (based in the Cayman Islands but controlled by Chinese shareholders) by the end of the year, and to establish effective moderation and monitoring of the age of its users.

Reproaches in content distribution

In the past, TikTok has been accused of spying on and remotely geolocating journalists, transferring user data to China, and taking censorship measures to benefit China or its allies, particularly Russia during the invasion of Ukraine.

Following the Hamas attacks against Israel on October 7, Tiktok is now, along with its competitor Meta, in the crosshairs of the European Commission, which accuses them of spreading “false information” and “illegal content.”

With immense success among adolescents, the application normally prohibited for those under 13 years of age is finally worrying due to its “addictive” nature.

Tiktok has already received several fines related to the processing of minors’ data; The last European fine amounted to 354 million euros in September.
