To relax at work, some people take breaks, chat with colleagues or have a coffee. But a study suggests a completely different alternative for British employees: visiting an adult site.
A study by Ofcom, the UK’s telecommunications regulator, analyzes internet usage across the English Channel. As is often the case, this data, collected in May 2023, is an opportunity to look at British consumption of pornographic content.
Almost an hour of consultation on average
According to Ofcom, 29% of adults consume these videos in the United Kingdom, or 13.8 million people. They are mainly men (73%). But what is intriguing are the attendance times.
The study shows that most traffic occurs during the day. Visits are most numerous between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. During this period, 21% of the adult online population visits adult sites. This means that one in five people on the Internet during office hours visits a pornographic site. This is more than in the morning (18%), at the end of the day (13%) or at night (17%).
However, it is late at night or early in the morning that Britons spend the longest time watching pornographic videos. In May, the average consultation time per visitor was measured at 59 minutes between midnight and 9am (compared to 55 minutes during the day).
As for content providers, Brits especially like Pornhub. The number one in the category is the most consulted in the entire Channel. Additionally, the United Kingdom is the second most visited country on Pornhub, according to the site’s 2022 statistics. The country is behind the United States and ahead of France.
In France, pornographic sites are harshly criticized. Five major domains were even close to being banned in the territory in June. In the administration’s sights, verification of the age of users. Now you must go beyond your declarative model to impose real verification. But in the absence of a proper system, a status quo appears to have established itself.
