Protection of minors: the heads of the main social networks will soon be heard in the US Senate

The heads of Meta, X, TikTok, Snap and Discord will be heard on January 31 by the US Senate to improve the protection of children against sexual exploitation on their platforms.

This hearing, scheduled for January 31, is the result of long negotiations, said Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and his Democratic counterpart Dick Durbin.

“Now that the five companies have agreed to cooperate, we hope to hear from their bosses,” they stressed.

No major reform yet

Facebook and Instagram boss Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter’s now-appointed CEO Linda Yaccarino are among those in attendance.

TikTok boss Shou Zi Chew will also be present. The leader of Singapore had already been interviewed in Congress at the end of March, at a time when elected officials were considering banning his short video platform on American soil.

If Congress has failed for years to agree on laws to better regulate the information technology giants, the issue of child protection tends to unite elected officials from both major political parties. But not enough to lead, for the moment, to major reform.

At the same time, around thirty American states filed lawsuits against Meta at the end of October, accusing its Facebook and Instagram platforms of harming the “physical and mental health of young people.”
