Following Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, Kanye West’s takeover of his conservative competitor Parler could also shake up the digital sector. In a press release issued on October 17, the company announces that it has reached an agreement in principle with the rapper to purchase the platform. Launched in 2018, Parler is a social network popular among the American and European extreme right, with the presence of activist accounts banned on Twitter for comments considered racist or violent.
Application “anti-cancellation culture”
Kim Kardashian’s ex-husband has come under fire for posting posts deemed anti-Semitic in early October. In the same press release, the company talks about its desire to ensure a world impervious to “cancel culture,” echoing one of Kanye West’s latest Twitter posts.
Already in 2020, French political figures had also promoted Parler to “escape censorship” on Twitter, such as Marion Maréchal, a former executive of the FN and now of the Reconquista party.
Shortly after the capture of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Parler was temporarily banned from the App Store, Apple’s application store, for lack of moderation. Despite this desire to promote absolute freedom of expression, Parler remains bound to moderate hate speech, as required by law in France.
