The world of technology is particularly highlighted in the 2023 edition of Petit Robert, which presented its new words. “Instagramer”, “NFT”, “grazer” and “cyber espionage”, these are the four terms from the technological field of this new edition.
A new profession that has appeared in recent years, “instagramer” enters the Petit Robert which defines it as “a person (influencer, content creator) who carries out his activity by posting photos and videos on his Instagram account”. Five years ago, the word “Youtubeur” made its entrance.
Whether or not you are a fan of this technology, the NFT (Non Fungible Token) also has its place. The dictionary indicates that it is a “cryptographic certificate associated with a digital object (image, video, music, etc.) whose authenticity and traceability are guaranteed by the blockchain. The NFT is the property title, the value of which depends on the course of the cryptocurrencies.” The anglicisms thus continue to enter the dictionary and the daily use of the French language.
The growing number of tech words
Another more mysterious term related to technology: “herding”. Popularized by the Ivorian series Brouteur.com, broadcast on TV5 Monde, the word refers to a “thief who catches his victims on the Internet”.
Current events remind us that dictionaries must be adapted to our everyday use of language. Thus, “cyber espionage” is also entitled to its definition: “espionage practiced by infiltrating computer systems to seize strategic data.”
2022 was already a good year for the technological field through the terms VPN, vlog and fintech.
