Valve has announced the end of support for Steam on older versions of Windows. Starting January 1, gamers with a computer equipped with an outdated version of Microsoft’s operating system will no longer be able to benefit from software updates that will allow them to purchase, play and keep their videos up to date on their PC.
The announcement was made directly by Valve, the publisher of legendary software and video games such as counterattack EITHER Half life, 01Net discovered. On its site, Steam explains that starting January 1, 2024 it will abandon Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
Risks of data theft
Therefore, players who do not have a computer equipped with Windows 10 or 11 may no longer be able to use Steam. A support discontinuation means that the software’s publisher, Valve, will no longer offer updates. That is, future Steam bugs will no longer be fixed, greatly reducing the security of the store and game library.
This news comes as Microsoft itself stopped supporting Windows 8.1 in January 2023 and Windows 7 starting in January 2020. According to Valve, a player who continues to use these outdated versions of the operating system risks becoming infected with malware when connecting to Internet. The publisher even believes that connection credentials to Steam, but also to other services, could be stolen.
Above all, Valve specifies that it cannot guarantee the continued operation of Steam. In other words, the Play Store, but especially players’ game library, could become unavailable to people who aren’t upgrading to a newer version of Windows.
