The collapse was as sudden as it was massive. On Tuesday morning, a massive blackout hit the encrypted instant messaging app WhatsApp, affecting hundreds of millions of people around the world.
In the end, it took almost two hours for the platform to be operational again. Starting at 10:50 am French time, the connections were back up and running, not without a few hiccups: between slowness and disconnections, the restoration was obviously still tedious.
To AFP, Meta claims to have fixed the bug and apologizes for this bug.
Throughout the morning, users from around the world reported the outage on the Downdetector site, which lists outage reports. Much of the world – the UK, India, Turkey… – has been affected.
On Twitter, the hashtag #whatsappdown (WhatsApp down) was one of the most popular trends in the world.
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, did not officially communicate during this rare outage due to its scale and duration, but a spokesperson assured many that the group was actively working to restore it.
