A Ukrainian accused of infecting millions of computers with “Raccoon Infostealer” malware has been charged with computer and bank fraud in the United States, the US Justice Department announced Tuesday.
Mark Sokolovsky, 26, is being held in the Netherlands and the United States is seeking his extradition to its territory, the ministry added in a statement.
$200 per month
According to US justice, “Raccoon Infostealer” (“Information thief raccoon” in French) was rented to cybercriminals for $200 a month, which had to be paid in cryptocurrency.
The malware was then installed on the victim’s computer to collect personal data such as usernames, passwords, and financial information.
According to the ministry, the US Federal Police (FBI) and Italian and Dutch partners dismantled the structure behind “Raccoon Infostealer” in March 2022 and arrested Mark Sokolovsky on this occasion.
50 million identifiers
The FBI has identified more than 50 million identifiers, email addresses and credit card numbers, among others, among the stolen data.
Mark Sokolovsky is charged with computer fraud, bank fraud, money laundering, and identity theft. He faces up to 20 years in prison on charges of bank fraud and money laundering.
According to the statement, the Ukrainian national appealed a decision by a Dutch court that in September approved his extradition to the United States.
